An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? This is the story of my personal experiences in Los Angeles. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

An Actor's Journey archives

•  Back From the Beyond (Not Really)
It's been much too long since I've posted here. Despite rumors to the contrary, I have not left the business, the country, or the planet. I've just been really busy with acting and all other facets of my life.
•  The Media's Been Good to Me
I received a call last week from a news producer who’d read my blog posting mentioning using a to navigate between auditions. She was putting together a story on the subject and wanted to interview me. That sounded kinda cool so I agreed. A gent from the ABC station here in LA came by on Thursday and asked me some questions on camera about using the system, what I like about it and some specific experiences. He filmed me grabbing my headshots, leaving the house and using my GPS to drive around town and that was it.
•  Rumpled and Running
The Public Service Announcement (PSA) shoot went really well yesterday. I had an 8am call-time and left enough time to be able to sit patiently in traffic. I parked at a Universal Studios lot and was taxied to the set nearby. I went through wardrobe and make-up and that all went pretty quickly. I was playing
•  A Good Schedule Issue to Have
Well, strangely enough I booked that PSA. I got the call early this morning and shoot tomorrow. Interestingly enough, because this is the way things seem to go...
•  It Pays to be Organized
I just got a message from my agent that I have a callback for a PSA commercial. Public Service Announcement's don't pay as well as regular commercials but you can get some nice exposure and hey, it’s work. I was a bit confused about the callback until I remembered that I’d auditioned for this commercial way back on August 29th. Whoa! Since you rarely hear the outcome of an audition (unless you book it), I figured this one was decided and shot weeks ago. Apparently not...
•  Imagination is Alive and Well
I try to take a run most every morning. It’s good exercise and its time-efficient, two qualities that are especially appealing. I needed to make a bank deposit so I ran a bit further than usual to the local bank’s ATM. On the way to the cash machine, I passed by a giant dryer box that someone had discarded on a street corner...
•  Playing Catch-Up
Oy! This is long overdue. Though I've had the best of intentions, it's been far too long since I've posted here. Each time I had a moment, something else always seemed to come up and had me dashing off in another direction. In any case, here's what I've been up to....
•  A Close Callback
Do you ever get the feeling that someone's watching out for you? I certainly feel that way sometimes and it was confirmed in my mind on Monday...
•  Better Than a Kick in the Mouth
As you can see, I haven’t been posting here as much lately. I've had the best of intentions but have been quite busy with the plays, auditions, classes, submissions, graphic design work (my "day-job"), and family stuff as well. Today was an interesting example...
•  Fun Yet Tiring Work
As you may recall, I’m currently performing in a pair of one-act plays at the Repertory East Playhouse in Santa Clarita, CA. I'm really enjoying the work (and working with a great cast and crew) but have to admit the plays are a bit exhausting (which accounts, in part, for the reason there’s been fewer postings around here)...
•  Callback & Paid for Waiting
I received a particularly nice check the other day. Just about any check you receive is a nice one but this one falls under the "particularly nice" category because I wasn't expecting it. The check came through SAG and was for a Gillette callback...
•  Where Did I Go?
I've been incredibly busy the past few weeks in a number of areas. I'm in rehearsals for lead roles in two plays and memorizing lines, shot a nice supporting role in a short film, have been auditioning, taking classes, and working, and blah, blah blah. Because my plate has been so full, I've been skipping my exercise routine...
•  The Loser Contestant
I just came back from a callback for that Orbitz spot that I auditioned for earlier in the week. There were
•  A Men in Black Convention
I had an "audition" today for a Lexus auto brochure. I say "audition" because I didn't really do much more than assume a pose, look a bit scary and have my photo taken. I got the notice last night and thankfully...
•  Uptight Casual
One of those days. You know the kind -- when you wake up and you know that you have a list of appointments and things to accomplish, and there's only one way that you're going to get them all done. There's a certain order and you can't waste a minute. Today was one of those days.
•  A Very Full Head
I haven't been posting very much lately and for good reason. I've been cast in lead roles in two one-act plays that will be running at the Repertory East Playhouse in Santa Clarita..
•  A Flood of Emotions
Earlier in the week, I got a call to work for two days on the NBC soap "Passions." I've worked on the show before and really enjoyed it. Super nice cast and crew. Unfortunately
•  Agents: Decision Made
Thanks to everyone for their thoughtful feedback and opinions concerning my agent dilemma. I made a decision a few days after the post but have been so busy that I haven't had the chance to give you an update...

•  Hey, I Know a Guy...
It's funny how things go in cycles. Just a few days after seeing and auditioning with a friend from 'Ten Little Indians,' I saw a Comcast commercial featuring a former castmate and Mr. T no less.
