An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? These are some of my personal experiences in Los Angeles and beyond. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

Johnny Depp on Jack Sparrow's Physicalization

Johnny Depp as Jack SparrowThough I'm not as big a fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean films as most, I am a huge fan of Johnny Depp. He is always imaginative and fascinating to watch. I enjoyed the Pirates sequel, mostly because of Depp's abandonment and charming performance.

It's been widely mentioned that Depp created Captain Jack Sparrow as a cross of rock legend Keith Richards and cartoon romantic Pepe LePew. Here's a bit of insight of how he created Sparrow's unique movements:

"I imagined those pirates out in the open sea in extreme heat, no escape from the sun and humidity, so I thought it would be interesting to jack up the sauna pretty good and see how long I could take it. I cranked it up to, like, 240 degrees. I was cooking. That degree of heat makes you move involuntarily. That's where all of Captain Jack's jerky movements came from."

Comments

You not getting comments is somewhat disturbing to me...I don't know why. It's kind of like seeing a playground without children playing. So I am going to leave one.

I liked Pirates of the Carribean I and II . I enjoyed the movies very much. I can't wait for number III.

Hee-hee. That's rather funny.

I haven't been able to give the blog much attention myself lately. Thanks Marsha.

I agree that Johnny Depp is a fascinating and imaginative actor- one of the best there is, in my opinion. I can't think of another film actor who is more adept at utilising physicalisation than he is, nor does he seem to be afraid of taking risks with it, as in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Pirates, for example.
