An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? This is the story of my personal experiences in Los Angeles. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

Uptight Casual

One of those days. You know the kind -- when you wake up and you know that you have a list of appointments and things to accomplish, and there's only one way that you're going to get them all done. There's a certain order and you can't waste a minute. Today was one of those days.

I awoke this morning around 5:45am. Dang. I'm running behind already. I rolled out of bed, dragged myself to the computer, checked email and was out the door, running to the gym. I got there in decent time and had a good, albeit a bit rushed, workout. I could have skipped the exercise but I had been sick for most of last week and didn't work out at all. I really need to get back into the routine and am always glad that I've worked out once its over (kinda like when you eat swiss-chard).

I ran back home and rechecked the computer for email and then ate a quick (but very protein-rich) breakfast. From there, I threw myself into the shower (thus saving the world from having to endure my sweaty and stinky body). I got out, got dressed, confirmed my directions and was out of the house by 9am.

My first stop was a rehearsal for a small film I'm doing called Xenophobia. It's being directed by Rob Phillips who I've worked with before. The film is about a small family who has camped out on the Mexico/US border and is taking the hot immigration issue into their own hands after losing a loved one. I'm playing one of the less rational and more extremist members.

I had recorded much of my dialogue into my Palm Tungsten C and listened to it on the way so that I could have most of the part memorized. I checked traffic conditions online before I left so I avoided most of the trouble spots. Quite an accomplishment on a Monday morning in LA. A big thank-you to the "traffic gods" wherever you are.

The rehearsal went well and I had to leave a bit after 11am to make it to an audition. I received two audition calls from my agent on Friday afternoon. That makes three in one week. Any doubts I had about making the move are quickly evaporating.

The first audition was an audio audition for Terry Berland Casting and I was able to do it over the phone on Friday night. I left a message and read a bit of random copy to Terry's voicemail. I felt good about it until I received a bit of extra audition information afterwards. They were looking for someone who was very 'serious-minded" and I gave somewhat of a somewhat warm and friendly read. We shall see.

The second audition (today's) was for an Orbitz Travel commercial. You know the ones. They're set up like a game show and feature game-show host veteran Wink Martindale. I was auditioning for the role of an uptight husband/lawyer. The wardrobe note was "casual." Well, that can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. I decided to do "uptight casual" and dressed in brown loafers, khakis, a white t-shirt, a blue Oxford dress shirt, and a dressy suit jacket. I thought the wardrobe might be overkill, especially after seeing other, more casual, people in the waiting area (which was also populated by actors auditioning for other projects; some in surfing wet-suits and others in all black clothes -- what a wacky town). The casting director however commented that I was wearing exactly what they wanted. Hooray for small victories.

I auditioned with two other people and it seemed to go well. We did it twice and that was it. I hopped in my very warm car and headed home to get some work done, to memorize more lines and to go to rehearsal this evening. Run, run, run...but hey, at least I'm dressed correctly!

Sounds like a busy day, but for an actor a busy day is a good day I think. Let us know when you hear about the auditions, best of luck.

I'm glad to hear that you are being productive...and you didn't hit the alarm clock 50 gillion times before getting out of bed like my husband does. :) Seriously, I'm glad your being a busy actor.

Marsha: Thanks. The alarm clock is across the room so I'd have to get up to turn it off. Fortunately, I have a pretty good "inner clock" that keeps me on schedule -- most of the time.
