An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? This is the story of my personal experiences in Los Angeles. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

A Men in Black Convention

Bad AssI had an "audition" today for a Lexus auto brochure. I say "audition" because I didn't really do much more than assume a pose, look a bit scary and have my photo taken.

I got the notice last night and thankfully was able to fit it in with a prearranged film rehearsal (which was later cancelled anyway). The audition wardrobe information was very specific. They wanted to see guys who looked like CIA agents; clean-shaven, fit bodies, white shirt, black suit, black tie and sunglasses. You can't get much more clear than that.

I got to the casting office and found a parking spot. I saw a number of men in black suits walking along the way as well as a few congregating outside the building. I went in, filled out my sheet, they took my info and then took my photo a couple times. I assumed my best "I'm gonna mess you up" pose and was told I looked especially daunting when I put my sunglasses on. Cool.

The photo at right was the one that I'm guessing inspired them to call me. Pretty sacry guy don't you think? Why would the casting director want to call me in to take quick photos when they have my professional headshot? Well because, strangely enough, sometimes people don't look like their headshots -- they could have been taken 5 years ago, 30 pounds ago, or a whole head of hair ago. Since the car company is shooting the brochure soon, they need to know what you look like right now.

So, I left after being photographed and was on my way, well ahead of my call time. On my way out, I passed a number of CIA-agent wannabes. It was like I was looking into a mirror . . . or maybe attending a Blues Brothers concert . . . or going to a Men in Black convention!

Print go-sees are my favorite (not). It just feels so strange to wait around for a polaroid to develop, then "thanks for coming!" Glad I took all those commercial classes... :) And it never gets old running into your "twins" at auditions.

Thanks for the email on the site, I had NO idea it wasn't working...

Yeah, that "twins" thing can be quite the trip...;-)
