An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? This is the story of my personal experiences in Los Angeles. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

What's the Song You Sing?

My wife and I had an opportunity to watch Walk the Line yesterday and enjoyed it. Though it didn't win a lot of Oscars last night (Reese Witherspoon notwithstanding), I think that's more due to the fact that it was an interesting year for movies. Particularly independents. I was fortunate enough to see many of the best picture contenders and I honestly wouldn't have been upset if any of them had won. They were all very well-made.

Here's some dialogue from Walk the Line that stood out to me. It was delivered to a young Johnny Cash after an uninspiring, run-of-the-mill performance. I think it can be applied to the way any artist should approach his/her craft -- and perhaps how we can all approach life.

"If you were hit by a truck and you were out in that gutter dying and you could sing one song -- one song people would remember before you're dirt -- one song that would let God know what you felt about your time here on Earth -- one song that would sum you up, you're telling me that would be the song you would sing?

Or would you sing something different? Something different. Something real. Something you felt.

Because I'm telling you right now, that's the kind of song people want to hear. That's the kind of song that truly saves people. It ain't got nothing to do with believing in God, Mr. Cash. It has to do with believing in yourself."

My family watched that movie last week. My older daughters gave it mixed reviews. They said it was OK. My husband liked it. Do you think it appealed to older viewers more than the younger crowd?

I need to see the movie now just because Witherspoon and Phoenix sing the songs themselves. Is it on Netflix yet?

Marsha: Possibly. It had a bit of a slow pace at times but I enjoyed it.

Jonathan: I'm sure it is. We got it at Blockbuster.

I rented this movie last night with the hopes of watching it tonight or tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it but am afraid that it can't possibly live up to all the good things I've heard about it. That's why I've waited this long to even attempt to watch it.

On a side note--Thinking about the song your souls sings... Do you know the song? Is it only yours, or is it something that's been out there but speaks to you personally. I know mine is "Come Rain or Come Shine" because my whole body starts to hum or vibrate when I hear it or sing it.
