An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? These are some of my personal experiences in Los Angeles and beyond. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

Knowing What You Want

Chris Botti"When I was 12 years old, I heard My Funny Valentine performed by my idol Miles Davis and it changed my life. I grew up in Oregon, and I knew then that I wanted to be a jazz musician and live in New York like Miles Davis. And I tell people that, the energy you put out, can come back.

So I got to New York and I ended up renting this apartment and, walking in with the real estate agent, I didn't tell him (I was a musician) -- because you don't tell real estate agents that you're a musician. And I said, 'I love this apartment. It's beautiful but, my goodness, look at that one that's right next to me.' And the real estate agent said 'Yeah, it belongs to Miles Davis.'

Of all the apartments in New York City, me the whitest person ever, moving from Oregon and renting this apartment and sharing a wall with Miles Davis."

-- Chris Botti (Grammy-nominated and acclaimed jazz trumpeter)
