It's All in How You Look at It
"One common thing you get is 'Oh, don't you hate the fundraising? I could never do what you do because I hate the idea of having to raise money.' I don't hate the idea of having to raise money. I don't even hate the reality of raising money because it's not that different from what I do in the rehearsal room.
Essentially what you're trying to do as a director in a rehearsal room is convince a group of people in that room that what you care about is worth caring about. You're asking actors to make an emotional investment in this script. You're asking designers to care about the story enough to bring out their best. You're doing exactly the same thing when you're fundraising. You're trying to share the ownership of this extrordinary resource, The Public Theatre, with an audience whose ability to help is through their pocketbook. That's just another ability to invest. That's just another way of expressing caring. It all feels like the same job to me and it's a job I enjoy, love."
-- Oscar Eustis, Stage Director and currently the Artistic Director of The Public Theater (started by the legendary Joseph Papp in New York)
This could not have come at a more appropriate time for me. Soon my business plan will be complete and I will formally begin fundraising for the film. This gives me encouragement. Thanks!
