An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? This is the story of my personal experiences in Los Angeles. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

Holiday Gifts

Union commercials can be a very lucrative job for an actor -- which explains why the competition's so fierce! The first time a spot runs, the actor gets a decent amount of money. But as the spot runs more and more (past the initial 13 week cycle), the money really adds up -- without any additional work from the actor. You can really hit paydirt if it's renewed several times or if the commercial is recut into several spots. Commercials usually have a pretty limited run. If a commercial's going to be renewed, it's usually done immediately following its original run.

Holiday commercials seem to be the most common exception. This year, I've been amazed about the number of holiday commercials that have been resurrected from years' past. Have you seen the Campbell Soup commercial featuring the snowman that melts into a kid as he eats the delectable soup? Or the Verizon spot that shows a shopping mall family of four without a means to communicate? Each has been resurrected annually for the past few years. Heck, that Campbell's kid is probably in college by now (which was financed by this spot) ! What a nice surprise for those actors! Talk about the gift that keeps on giving...

Interesting. I learned something new today.

So true, so true. What about that coffee commercial that was brought back yet again this year with the son coming home from college and getting surprised by his little sister. Together they make coffee to wake EVERYONE else up!

Even the production values screams "1980's" on this one but it's the one I wait for every year. It has to be close to if not over 30 years old.

Yes! That's another one that keeps coming back. It's really old but I too enjoy seeing it. It must be like winning the lottery for them...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys!

Hey thanks for such nice wishes for the New Year. I wish for you to get a big fat Union Commercial that runs every year and becomes a classic!! I also hope your career continues to grow as big as your passion for doing what you love!!

I heard that George Strait sings Let It Snow on the Campbells commercial and I am just wondering if that is true... anyone know ?
