The Jury's Out
I've been busy with play rehearsal and cramming lots of lines of dialogue in my head. The director's asked us to be off-book (having memorized all our lines and stage directions) this week and I'm trying to do that. I have other things going on and it's not going as quickly as I'd like. Urrr.
The stage show callback went pretty well on Wednesday. It took about two hours and, judging from the small number of men there for the callback, I think I have a good shot. I got the feeling that I wasn't exactly what they had in mind so we shall see. On top of the callback, I also a meeting and a class that day. A very busy Wednesday of driving around town, coupled with my trying to memorize lines in the moments in between.
This week isn't as crazy (at the moment) though I have been called for jury duty. I have to tell you, it really burns me. In theory, sure, I think people should do their civic duty. But I'm self-employed, both as an actor and as a graphic designer, and when I don't work, I don't make money for my family. I may not be able to afford to take time off to spend with my family but the government can force me to take time off to do their bidding. Nobody's covering my income while I sit in a random courtroom while the people who made the laws are paid (in part, by me) to shuffle their papers and consider what they'll do on their next paid day off. From where I sit, the California jury process stinks and I'm certainly going to find out what I can do to change it.
End of rant. The defense rests. Thank you.
