An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? This is the story of my personal experiences in Los Angeles. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

Taking the Big Leap

Will Smith"I remember when I was about 20, I watched people running and jumping off this high cliff into the sea in Jamaica. I can't swim, and I was terrified. It was unbearable to watch other people jump and be that frightened of doing it myself. I couldn't leave that place without going off the cliff so, for about three minutes, I stood there on the edge, scared, thinking, 'This is ridiculous.' Then I jumped off the cliff, feet first, and went in the water.

I can't run away when I'm scared. I always have to attack. That's how I deal with seemingly difficult things. I've learned to use it (fear), to flip that negative energy around and make it a challenge. I keep going because I doubt myself. It drives me to be better. I've learned that the mastery of self-doubt is the key to success."

— Will Smith, musician and actor best known for TV’s Fresh Prince of Bel Air and movies like Independence Day and Ali.
