An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? These are some of my personal experiences in Los Angeles and beyond. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

Making Connections

Hugh Jackman"I am a believer that there is a connection to every person, everything. That's my own spiritual belief. And so, I feel that theatre, beyond the immediate form of entertainment and education, is a reminder to everyone of that connection.

What ironically is required is not a lot of 'doing' but a lot of 'letting go.' I think a lot of it's natural. What I found, when I started acting, was that I was trying so hard to find the character. Understanding yourself is having enough confidence in yourself to just let go and let the music or the story or the dialogue or just simply just being with the people, eye contact -- and let that establish a connection. Take any barriers away that you can and get rid of them.

All of the things you learn about; having an action in a scene, relationships, concentrating on all of these; are really all about our tools for taking away the barriers -- so you can let the drama happen that is written for you."

-- Hugh Jackman, actor best known for roles in movies like X-Men and Van Helsing and for hosting the Tony Awards, speaking about interacting with the audience during Broadway performances of Boy from Oz.

Wow, this quote is so very true. I love it. Where did you find it from?

Such a simple concept and yet hard to do... Glad you like it!

I believe it's from an episode of "Inside the Actor's Studio." He was interviewed last year during his run of "Boy from Oz."
