An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? This is the story of my personal experiences in Los Angeles. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

Director Protection

Kevin Costner"I treat all of my actors differently because you're all different and you all need different things. My job (as a director) is to not let you fail and to make sure you look good. And there is no way that, if you work in my movie, that you're ever going to fail or not look good because that's my promise to my actors."

-- Kevin Costner, Academy Award-winning actor and director most known for Dances with Wolves, Field of Dreams, Waterworld and The Untouchables.

Wow, I wish all directors thought like that. I have had a couple who think along those same lines and you know what....they were actors once too. I think it's because they understand how to communicate with us (actors) better. I am a HUGE advocate of directors taking acting classes. Really, I think it would help them all to better get what they are looking for out of their actors.

So...I'm glad you enjoyed the trailer. Yeah, I can only say that I'm the "ring leader" and I follow that girl around who is in the chair and make her do evil things and slowly drive her insane. She ends up in an insane asylum because of me. I can't wait. It's a really different role for me which makes it both challenging and fun.

When do you you start your new acting gig?

I've worked with some great directors who had acting backgrounds and have far preferred them over the "non-actor" types. Actually, my best experience with creative teams (direction, music, dance, etc.) have been with those who approach their work the same way.

I don't start rehearsals on the kids project until the early Spring which is fine. I open in "Drive" mid-November and am scheduled to start an original play after that. I'm set in terms of theatre work, now to get more tv & film work...

Trevor - I am enjoying your blog - but please work with me - are you saying that Kevin Costner is a great director?

Posted by: Jill | October 25, 2005 07:13 AM

Hi Jill,
I wasn't really commenting on his directing abilities. I was saying that, as an actor, I really prefer working with directors who have acting experience/backgrounds over those that don't.

Is Kevin Costner a great director? I don't know. I've only seen one of the films he directed (Dances with Wolves) and I recall that it was very well-made -- especially for a movie of its length and size (working outside, with horses and stampeding herds of buffalo).

It was his vision, huge in the box office and won several Oscars (one for directing and one for best picture) as well.

I don't know if he's "great" but few directors have that kind of critical, artistic or commercial success.
