An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? These are some of my personal experiences in Los Angeles and beyond. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

#670? Yup, That's Me!

I had an "audition" today for a Verizon print project. I'm not exactly sure what the "use" would be but if I got it, they'd be taking my picture and paying me some nice cash. I could keep my clothes on so it's all good.

My appointment was with the nice folks of McBride Casting at the fabled Westside Casting Studios in Santa Monica (most actors in town know this location as several casting directors use the space). Unfortunately, my calltime was at 5:05pm. Getting there wasn't too bad but, the ride back up the 405 in peak rush hour traffic is slow going at best (I'm talking a 1.5 - 2 hour drive). Just about the only downside to living in a nice suburban area outside of LA.

I got there in plenty of time and had worked on memorizing my play script all along the way. Now granted that they were "auditioning" (read: taking snapshots of people) for 16 different roles but, I was shocked when I learned I was auditionee #670. This one was certainly all about "the look," whatever that is in this case. With just snapshots and that volume of faces, how could it be anything but? Talk about a shot in the dark...still, an audition is an audition. As they say about the lottery, "you can't win if you don't play."

I drove back north to home and play rehearsal and the traffic wasn't too bad. I tried to memorize more lines but after a long day of work and drives, my mind absolutely refused to accept any more data for today.

Rehearsal went okay but I was tired and my brain only allowed me to spit out some of the lines I've already learned. Even in thick traffic, I swear they were much better in the car...

trevor - do you usually take off your clothes for print ads? you seemed relieve to leave them on... i am sure your wife must appreciate a modest verizon ad as well!

Hee-hee. No, I was just joking (perhaps not so well). I usually keep my clothes on for commercial auditions (and other types as well) -- no "casting couch" stories here.

As actors we're asked to do so many crazy things, it's sometimes nice to know, on some auditions, that it's just based on how you look -- for better or for worse -- and not on someone's perception of your acting abilities.

Thanks for reading!
