An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? This is the story of my personal experiences in Los Angeles. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

Working with Kids

A recent experience has reminded me that I really enjoy working with kids. I'm probably in the minority of actors on that one. Of course, I also have had a few challenging experiences as well. Don't ask about the shoot I did with a pair of highly energetic twin boys that caused our scene and my performance to land on the cutting room floor. I said "don't ask."

The things that I love most about working with kids are their creativity, enthusiasm and energy. They're typically not jaded about life and all of it excites them. It's infectious to be around and, after working with the younger generation, I'm usually left feeling energized and enthusiastic about my own work and opportunities.

Quality time with Dad and CalvinI'm currently working on a presentation film of a live-action version of the popular (and legendary) comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. I'm playing the beleaguered Dad of blonde-headed terror "Calvin" and am having a great time helping to bring one of my favorite strips to life.

Another highlight is working with the young man named Emerson who plays "Calvin." Emerson's got great energy and is as professional and as creative as most any adult I've worked with. We rehearsed for an audience tonight and ended up improv-ing for 5-10 minutes. That idea might intimidate some actors but we stayed connected and engaged with each other the entire time. It was great fun and a creatively fulfilling experience as well.
