An Actor's Journey

What does it mean to be an actor? How do actors do what they do? How do they deal with the frustrations and rejections? This is the story of my personal experiences in Los Angeles. Along the way I'll share what I've learned.

Welcome to Our Set

"Having been a guest start on so many shows myself, coming into new situations all the time, I was very sensitive to the fact that it's very difficult to come in to a 'family' when you're just going to work for one week.

Whenever somebody would guest-star on our show (the classic The Bob Newhart Show sitcom), I would always tell them where the ladies' room was, where the men's room was, who the A.D. was, that we went to lunch as a group and they were welcome to join us, and this is how this company worked.

It is awful to come in and be the new kid in school. You know, you barely have a week to do your job and to feel like you're out of it makes it even worse. So we were always very sensitive to that, and later, I was very proud when Henry Winkler and John Ritter both told me that they did the same things when they had their own shows because I had done it to them and it made a difference. And it does make a difference."
