Character Baggage
The read-through of How I Learned to Drive went well yesterday. We start rehearsals next week. Everyone seems really nice and I expect it to be a great experience. The only possible downside is the character I’m playing. It’s a great part and a wonderful piece but it’s sometimes hard to get all jazzed about playing someone who does what “Uncle Peck” does.
I’m not one who goes all Method and starts living his characters but acting, by definition is about fooling yourself a bit and pretending that you’re someone else. As such, it’s hard to not take on some of a character’s “baggage.” When you do a light musical, you tend to feel happier. When you do drama, things feel a bit heavier. No complaints, just an observation.
I have a meeting with my new career coach today and I’m looking forward to getting some additional movement in that area. I also have a rehearsal for the Calvin & Hobbes live-action piece as well.
I’ll be driving around town a lot so I’ll use the drive time to make some calls and work on my lines for Drive. Traffic in LA can be so time-consuming that I really appreciate it when I can find a good way to use the time constructively.
